Flight dispatchers at Porter Airlines have voted unanimously in favour of strike action after more than 14 months of negotiations failed to produce a first collective agreement.

The Canadian Airline Dispatchers Association announced Tuesday that all voting members supported the strike mandate. The 35 certified dispatchers joined CALDA in August 2024 seeking their first union contract.

Federal conciliation underway

Negotiations are in the final stages of conciliation with support from the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service. CALDA said Porter has refused to engage on key issues required for a fair contract.

“This strike vote reflects the deep frustration and disappointment felt by members,” said the association in a statement. “Porter’s actions leave us no choice but to stand together to protect our profession and ensure the airline meets its obligations to these skilled aviation workers.”

Training of non-union staff raises concerns

CALDA expressed concern that Porter has begun training a small number of non-unionized personnel as potential substitutes for the certified dispatchers in preparation for possible labour disruptions.

“These are certified aviation professionals whose expertise directly impacts the safety of every flight. They deserve a contract that reflects the value of their work,” said Rob King, national president of CALDA.

The association called the move unsafe, irresponsible and disrespectful to both employees and the traveling public.

Dispatchers support growing operations

Flight dispatchers at Porter support the airline’s domestic, transborder and international operations. CALDA said the workers are professional, certified and highly trained.

The association said it remains committed to negotiations and urged Porter to take immediate steps to resolve outstanding issues and avoid service disruptions in the new year.

CALDA represents certified flight dispatchers who share operational authority with pilots at seven major Canadian airlines: Air Canada, Air Transat, WestJet, Porter Airlines, Jazz Aviation, PAL Airlines and Canadian North.
