Saskatchewan employers are investing in benefits and workplace improvements despite global economic headwinds, according to the organizers of an annual employer recognition program.
Mediacorp Canada Inc. announced Saskatchewan’s Top Employers (2026) today, marking the 21st year of the competition that evaluates workplaces across eight criteria including benefits, training and community involvement.
“Saskatchewan is fortunate to have a healthy mix of public- and private-sector employers,” said Richard Yerema, executive editor of the Canada’s Top 100 Employers project. “Traditionally, public-sector organizations have led with benefits such as defined-benefit pensions and maternity and parental leave top-ups.”
Public and private sectors compete differently
The province’s employers range from Crown corporations and public institutions to private companies and small businesses. Public-sector organizations typically offer defined-benefit pensions and enhanced parental leave, according to Mediacorp.
Private-sector employers in Saskatchewan have developed different competitive advantages, particularly in speed and flexibility. These organizations can adapt programs and respond to employee feedback more quickly due to fewer layers of decision-making, according to Sonja Verpoort, assistant editor at Mediacorp.
“This flexibility allows small businesses and private employers to pivot when necessary and act quickly on employee feedback,” said Verpoort.
Evaluation criteria and process
Mediacorp editors review employers on eight criteria that have remained consistent since the competition began: workplace, work atmosphere and social, health/financial/family benefits, vacation and time off, employee communications, performance management, training and skills development, and community involvement.
The competition is open to any employer with its head office or principal place of business in Saskatchewan. Editors publish detailed reasons for selection, providing transparency in winner selection and a catalogue of best practices.
