Summit Wireline fined $55,000 after worker injured on job site

Summit Wireline Inc. has been fined $55,000 after pleading guilty to a workplace safety violation related to a serious injury sustained by a worker in 2022 in Saskatchewan.

On Sept. 23, 2024, the company entered a guilty plea in Lloydminster Provincial Court for failing to ensure sufficient and competent supervision at a worksite, a breach of clause 3-6 (1) of The Occupational Health and Safety Regulations, 2020. The violation resulted in a serious injury to a worker on Aug. 16, 2022, near Waseca, Sask. The worker was injured when a disc was ejected from a pressurized setting tool.

The court imposed a fine of $39,285.71, along with a surcharge of $15,714.29, bringing the total penalty to $55,000. Two additional charges against Summit Wireline were withdrawn.

The case highlights the importance of proper supervision in workplace safety. Under Saskatchewan’s Occupational Health and Safety legislation, employers are required to ensure that all work is conducted under adequate supervision to prevent accidents and injuries.
