Sun Life has rolled out a generative AI-powered Notes Assistant tool across Canada, designed to help financial advisors reduce time spent on administrative tasks and focus more on client interactions.

The tool automatically summarizes client meetings, generates action items, and drafts follow-up emails, offering what the company calls a more streamlined and consistent way for advisors to manage client communications. It follows a successful 2024 pilot, where all participating advisors reported saving at least 15 minutes per meeting, and two-thirds said they saved more than 30 minutes.

“This note-taking tool might be the best process upgrade delivered to advisors that I can recall in recent years,” said Chris Poole, president of CWP Financial Services Inc. and a Certified Financial Planner at Sun Life.

The Notes Assistant was developed with internal security protocols and privacy safeguards in mind, according to the company. Advisors must obtain verbal client consent before using the tool, and all data stays within Sun Life’s secure technology environment.

“Clients need trusted, tailored solutions, and this only comes from a rich, client-advisor experience,” said Rowena Chan, president of Sun Life Financial Distributors (Canada) Inc. “If we can leverage GenAI to help make this happen, and complement our personalized approach, there is huge benefit for all.”

The Notes Assistant tool is part of Sun Life’s wider digital strategy, which includes earlier initiatives like the Sun Life Asks GenAI chatbot that earned a 2024 CIO Award.
