Unifor is calling on Canada’s largest grocery retailers to prioritize Canadian-made products in response to the U.S. administration’s threat to impose new tariffs on Canadian exports.
In a letter sent to the CEOs of Empire, Loblaw, and Metro, Unifor National President Lana Payne urged the grocers to make it easier for consumers to identify and purchase domestic goods. The request comes amid concerns that potential 25% tariffs on Canadian exports could put tens of thousands of jobs at risk across multiple industries.
“Canadian workers and their families are ready to defend against the Trump tariff threat, and we need Canadian grocers to do their part,” Payne said. “These unfair tariffs are a direct attack on Canadian jobs. We are encouraging Empire, Loblaw, and Metro to help their customers support Canadian workers and companies.”
Unifor, which represents more than 11,000 grocery store workers and thousands more in food processing, warehousing, and distribution, is asking grocers to prioritize Canadian suppliers, ensure private-label brands are produced domestically, and find alternatives to U.S.-sourced goods where possible. The union is also calling for clearer signage and promotions to highlight Canadian-made products in stores.
Unifor has launched its Protect Canadian Jobs campaign in response to the trade tensions. The union is advocating for policies that support domestic industries and strengthen the economy.
