VIA Rail Canada has secured labour peace through 2027 after Unifor members ratified new collective agreements that will give 2,500 employees annual wage increases of three per cent over the next three years.

The agreements with Unifor’s Council 4000 and Local 100 were approved by a majority of unionized employees and run from January 1, 2025, through December 31, 2027. The deals cover workers across the country at Canada’s national passenger rail service.

Annual wage increases locked in

The contracts guarantee a three per cent annual wage increase for each year of the agreement, providing predictable labour costs for the Crown corporation as it works to modernize operations and expand service.

Beyond wage increases, the agreements include enhanced working conditions and improved benefits, though VIA Rail did not provide specific details on these improvements.

“These agreements represent a significant step forward for VIA Rail and our teams,” said Mathieu Paquette, Chief Communications and Human Resources Officer at VIA Rail. “They reaffirm our shared commitment to building a workplace where employees feel valued and supported, while positioning us to continue delivering the safe, reliable, and accessible service our passengers count on every day.”

Labour stability amid modernization

The three-year deals provide operational stability as VIA Rail continues efforts to modernize its aging fleet and infrastructure. The company transported over four million passengers in 2024 and operates intercity trains connecting more than 400 communities across Canada.

The ratification comes at a time when many transportation companies across Canada have faced labour disputes and service disruptions. The predictable labour costs and stable workforce should help VIA Rail maintain consistent service levels for passengers.

“We are grateful to our Unifor partners for their collaboration throughout this process, and to our negotiating teams for their dedication and professionalism,” Paquette added. “Together, we are laying the groundwork for a stronger future that benefits our employees, our passengers, and the communities we serve from coast to coast.”
