Manitoba is extending work permits for potential provincial nominee candidates whose permits have expired or will expire soon, allowing them to remain in the province for two more years.
Labour and Immigration Minister Malaya Marcelino announced the new temporary public policy that will take effect April 22, targeting workers who intend to become permanent residents.
“By allowing eligible candidates to extend their work permits, we’re helping more Manitoba workers and families to continue building their lives in Manitoba,” said Marcelino. “This is good news for our economy, businesses and communities across Manitoba.”
Two-year extension available next week
The Manitoba-specific work permit extension will apply to Manitoba Provincial Nominee Program (MPNP) candidates whose work permits expired in 2024 or are set to expire in 2025.
Eligible workers must be currently employed in Manitoba and planning to establish permanent residency in the province.
Beginning April 22, applicants who meet the criteria can request a support letter from the provincial government by completing an online submission form.
Supporting economic growth
The policy aims to retain skilled workers already contributing to Manitoba’s economy while they navigate the permanent residency process.
The extension provides stability for both employees and employers, allowing businesses to maintain their workforce while workers continue their path toward permanent immigration status.
This measure addresses challenges in the immigration system that can create gaps between temporary work permits and permanent residency approval.
