NuStef Baking has been fined $55,000 after a worker was seriously injured while adjusting equipment at its Mississauga facility.
The case stems from a March 20, 2023, incident in which a worker was hurt while adjusting the speed of a batter depositor on an industrial oven. The employee reached below the oven to manually turn a knob while the depositor was in motion and was injured.
An investigation by the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development found the oven was not properly guarded. While the worker’s actions matched both their on-the-job training and the manufacturer’s instructions, the company failed to ensure the safety measures required under Ontario’s Industrial Establishments Regulation.
NuStef Baking pleaded guilty and was convicted on July 29, 2025, in the Provincial Offences Court in Mississauga. Justice of the Peace Kevin J. Boothroyd imposed the fine, with Crown counsel Shantanu Roy representing the prosecution.
The court also added a 25 per cent victim fine surcharge, which goes into a provincial fund to help victims of crime.
NuStef Baking is based in Vancouver, with the incident occurring at its location on Cawthra Road in Mississauga.
