A reforestation company has been acquitted of all occupational health and safety charges related to a 2020 workplace fatality in northern Alberta.
Blue Collar Silviculture Ltd. was found not guilty on Feb. 21 of eight counts under Alberta’s Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) legislation. The verdict was delivered in the Peace River Court of Justice following a trial into the death of a tree planter who was struck by a falling tree on July 2, 2020, in Mackenzie County.
The Crown has up to 30 days to appeal the decision.
Under Alberta’s OHS laws, employers are required to maintain safe workplaces and comply with regulations designed to protect workers. Charges can be laid when a failure to follow these rules results in a fatality or serious injury.
