Canada’s major labour organizations are meeting tonight to strategize a response to new U.S. tariffs set to take effect on March 4. The emergency meeting, convened by the Canadian Labour Congress (CLC), will focus on protecting workers and communities from potential economic fallout.
“With these tariffs rolling in, workers must be at the heart of Canada’s response,” said Bea Bruske, president of the CLC. “There is no time to wait. Families are feeling anxious, and workers expect more from their governments.”
The meeting will address several policy measures, including expanding Employment Insurance to support affected workers, halting public service cuts, and boosting trade apprenticeship programs. Union leaders will also discuss strategies to reduce reliance on U.S. trade, curb corporate price gouging, and strengthen domestic industries.
“These tariffs threaten good union jobs and entire industries,” Bruske said. “Canada must fight back with a comprehensive response that strengthens our economy and ensures workers aren’t left behind.”
The meeting will take place virtually.
