Canadian Nuclear Laboratories and its parent company, Nuclear Laboratory Partners of Canada, have raised $160,000 for this year’s United Way campaign after NLPC matched dollar-for-dollar the $80,000 donated by CNL employees.

Dennis Carr, CNL’s president and chief executive officer, said the campaign reflects a broader community commitment that NLPC plans to build on.

“CNL and NLPC recognize the role that local businesses can play as a community partner in supporting those who are less fortunate, and we are incredibly proud of the way our employees dug deep into their pockets this year to do so through CNL’s annual United Way campaign. NLPC has only recently assumed ownership of CNL, but the United Way campaign is aligned with our values and part of a larger community involvement plan that is only getting started. Working together, we intend to offer meaningful support to our local communities in areas that include education, social services and economic development.”

Where the money goes

Employees at CNL’s three locations collectively raised funds for local United Way chapters. The totals, each of which NLPC matched, broke down as follows:

  • $50,000 for United Way Eastern Ontario, raised at the Chalk River Laboratories campus
  • $20,000 for Northumberland United Way, raised at the Port Hope locations in Ontario
  • $10,000+ for United Way Winnipeg, raised at the Pinawa site in Manitoba

CNL employees have participated in United Way fundraising since the early 1960s.

Events behind the total

Staff took part in a range of fundraising events during the campaign. At Chalk River, activities included a pancake breakfast, a human resources team bake sale, a pet photo contest, online bingo, and parking spot raffles. Employees at the Whiteshell site held a chili cook-off, while Port Hope staff ran an Ultimate Burger Battle competition.

Carr said he wanted to personally thank everyone who gave their time or money to the campaign.

“We’re off to a great start, and I want to personally thank everyone who donated this year through their time and financially, to make this year’s campaign so successful.”
