An Alberta oil and gas equipment manufacturer has been fined $125,000 after a worker was seriously injured on a lathe at its Calgary facility.

Steelhaus Technologies Inc. pleaded guilty July 30 in Calgary Court of Justice to failing to provide proper safeguards around moving machinery parts, said court records. The fine includes a 20 per cent victim fine surcharge.

The Crown withdrew eight other charges against the company.

The charges stem from a May 27, 2023 incident at the company’s Calgary manufacturing facility. A worker was seriously injured while using a computer numerical control lathe for finishing and polishing work, said the court filing.

The company violated the Occupational Health and Safety Code by not ensuring proper safeguards were in place when a worker could come into contact with moving equipment parts.

Both Steelhaus Technologies and the Crown have 30 days to appeal the conviction or penalties.

Alberta’s workplace safety laws establish basic health and safety rules for employers across the province. Charges under these laws may be laid when safety violations result in fatalities or serious injuries.
