Loblaw Companies will close a Dominion grocery store in St. John’s on May 8, affecting approximately 100 unionized workers.
Unifor Local 597, which represents the affected employees, was informed of the closure on Jan. 19. The union represents more than 1,600 Dominion grocery workers at 11 stores across Newfoundland and Labrador.
Under the collective agreement, affected workers have severance rights based on their seniority. The union said it will work with the employer to ensure all provisions of the agreement are upheld.
“It’s incredibly disappointing for our members, many of whom have dedicated decades of service to this company and community,” said Carolyn Wrice, president of Unifor Local 597.
The local union will maintain regular communication with members throughout the closure process, providing updates and answering questions.
Jennifer Murray, Unifor Atlantic regional director, said the union will support members during the transition.
“Our members are feeling incredibly concerned by the news and worried about their future,” said Murray. “Our union will be right there with them to make sure no one is left to navigate this process alone.”
Unifor represents 320,000 workers across Canada and is the country’s largest private sector union.
