Saskatchewan’s Opposition NDP says the province needs to stop sabre-rattling with teachers over a new contract and just get the deal done.

NDP Leader Carla Beck says Education Minister Jeremy Cockrill is fearmongering when he should be trying to reach an agreement.

Beck’s comments come as teachers complete the final day of voting on whether to accept the deal with the Saskatchewan Party government.

Results of the vote are slated to be released tonight.

Cockrill had raised the stakes on the vote when he said he would consider extending the school year should teachers reject the offer and resume their job action.

Beck says there have been many opportunities for Cockrill to work with teachers and that he’s playing a dangerous game with education in the process.

The province is promising wage increases of three per cent in the first and second years, followed by a two per cent raise in the third year.

It has also pledged to follow through on a commitment of more funding for classroom supports.
