The New Brunswick government and the union representing more than 80 court stenographers have signed a new collective agreement that includes wage increases totaling $5 per hour over four years.

The provincial government reached the deal with the Canadian Union of Public Employees Local 1840, according to a government announcement Tuesday. The wage increases are retroactive to Oct. 1, 2021.

Court stenographers will receive staggered hourly wage increases under the four-year agreement, according to the government. The increases are $1 in the first year, $1.10 in the second year, $1.30 in the third year, and $1.60 in the fourth year.

The agreement also includes incentives and premiums to address recognition and retention issues, along with increases to the transcription premium, the government said. The vacation entitlement structure has been revised to give employees greater access to vacation days.

“We truly value the work of these skilled and hard-working employees,” said Finance and Treasury Board Minister René Legacy. “It’s great to see both sides come together with a shared commitment to reach a fair and balanced agreement.”
