New Brunswick has reached a tentative agreement with the union representing 750 correctional officers and other public safety workers, ending negotiations that could have affected operations at provincial facilities.

The provincial government announced Thursday it had struck a deal with the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Local 1251, which represents correctional officers, correctional cooks, laundry and custodial workers, human services counsellors and other staff.

“I thank the negotiating teams for their hard work and diligence in reaching this tentative agreement,” said Finance and Treasury Board Minister René Legacy. “These employees serve critical roles in public safety, and I look forward to the agreement ratification in the coming weeks.”

The government said details of the agreement will remain confidential until union members vote on ratification in the coming weeks.

CUPE Local 1251 members work in roles essential to the province’s correctional system and public safety operations. The union represents workers across multiple job classifications within the provincial government’s correctional facilities.

Union ratification meetings are expected to take place over the next several weeks, though specific dates have not been announced.
