Newfoundland and Labrador expands support for skilled newcomers seeking licensure

by HR News Canada

The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador is urging individuals with international or out-of-province credentials who are not currently working in their field to reach out to the Fair Registration Practices Office for assistance in obtaining licensure or registration.

The office works to ensure that skilled newcomers receive a transparent, timely, and fair assessment by the relevant regulatory body for their profession. Services include guidance on the provincial licensure process, identifying funding opportunities, and developing pathways to employment.

“Supporting skilled newcomers to work in their chosen field and reach their economic potential is an ongoing priority for the provincial government,” the government said in a statement.

For individuals uncertain about whether their occupation is regulated in Newfoundland and Labrador, the government recommends using the Foreign Credential Recognition in Canada Tool. Regulatory bodies oversee licensure to ensure applicants meet provincial standards for safe and competent practice.

Since 2021, the province has provided funding to regulatory bodies and community-based organizations to improve credential recognition processes. Several initiatives have also been introduced to make it easier for health-care professionals to obtain licensure, including the creation of a health professional navigator role, streamlined registration for registered nurses, and new licensing pathways for internationally trained physicians.

Other measures include a fast-track application process for physicians licensed in other Canadian jurisdictions, a supervised practice program for nurses, and a bridging program for assistant nurses from Jamaica seeking licensure as licensed practical nurses in the province.
