by HR News Canada

The Saskatchewan Health Authority has been fined $75,000 after pleading guilty to a workplace safety violation stemming from a 2023 incident in which a worker was seriously injured in Kelvington, Sask.

The organization admitted in Rose Valley Provincial Court on Dec. 11, 2024, to violating subsection 16-5(1) of The Occupational Health and Safety Regulations, 2020. The charge related to failing to ensure that a ladder was designed, constructed, used, and maintained in a way that ensured safe operation.

The court imposed a fine of $53,571.43, along with a $21,428.57 surcharge, for a total penalty of $75,000. An additional charge against the health authority was withdrawn.

The incident occurred on May 11, 2023, when a worker fell from a stepladder and sustained serious injuries. Details about the worker’s condition or the nature of the ladder’s failure were not disclosed.

The Saskatchewan Health Authority has not issued a public statement about the case or steps it may be taking to address the issue.
