An industrial painting and coating company in Alberta, Sonic Coating Solutions Inc., has been fined $350,000 following a workplace fatality that occurred in October 2021.

The penalty was imposed by the Leduc Court of Justice on May 22, after the company pleaded guilty to one charge under the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Act.

The incident in question took place at Sonic Coating Solutions’ facility in Leduc, Alta. On Oct. 30, 2021, a worker lost their life after being struck by a section of pipe that fell from a loader. Following the incident, 14 charges were initially laid against the company under OHS legislation. However, the Crown withdrew 13 of these charges as part of the plea agreement.

The $350,000 fine includes a victim fine surcharge, which is a standard component of penalties imposed under OHS laws.
