CPKC workers vote 99% in favour of strike action

by HR News Canada

Workers at Canadian Pacific Kansas City Railway (CPKC) have voted 99% in favour of strike action, according to Unifor, citing job security, fair wages, and improved working conditions as key concerns.

The vote gives the union a strike mandate, allowing job action if a new collective agreement is not reached by 12:01 a.m. EST on Jan. 29, 2025.

“This strike mandate shows the strength and determination of CPKC workers to achieve a fair deal,” Unifor National President Lana Payne said. “Members are united in their demands for job security and work ownership, fair wages, and improved working conditions.”

Negotiations between Unifor and CPKC are scheduled to resume in Calgary from Jan. 24 to Jan. 29. Payne said the union bargaining committee will continue working toward an agreement that “meets the needs of all members.”

Unifor represents more than 1,200 members of Local 101R who work in mechanical shops, inspecting and maintaining CPKC’s locomotives and freight cars to ensure the equipment is safe and operational.
