Employers in Atlantic Canada are adopting workplace improvements more quickly than ever before, driven by the need to attract and retain talent amid national competition, according to the latest Atlantic Canada’s Top Employers ranking.
The annual list, published by Mediacorp Canada Inc., recognizes Atlantic employers that offer exceptional workplaces. This year’s winners have notably expanded benefits related to mental health resources and family-friendly policies, said Kristina Leung, managing editor at Mediacorp.
“Traditionally, employers in Atlantic Canada carefully evaluated new workplace trends emerging elsewhere in Canada before adopting them,” Leung said. “This year marks a shift, with employers quickly adopting significant improvements, particularly around inclusive family-friendly policies and mental health support.”
The pandemic spurred population growth in the Atlantic region, increasing competition for employees. Employers recognized the urgency to offer benefits comparable to or exceeding those in other regions of Canada to maintain their workforce.
“Employers in Atlantic Canada understand they must keep pace with national standards to remain competitive,” Leung said. “Improvements in mental health assistance and family-friendly benefits are making a real difference, helping employees balance work and home life.”
The competition, now in its 16th year, assesses employers across eight consistent criteria: workplace; work atmosphere and social aspects; health, financial, and family benefits; vacation and time off; employee communications; performance management; training and skills development; and community involvement. Winners include public and private sector organizations based in Atlantic Canada.
