Municipal leaders in Prince Edward Island now have access to free counselling services to help manage the mental and emotional demands of public service.
Municipal Leaders Talk provides confidential support to mayors, councillors, and chief administrative officers across the province. The Government of Prince Edward Island is funding the program.
Addressing public service pressures
The service covers a range of issues including stress, anxiety, substance use, bereavement, depression, family conflict, and financial difficulties. Trained professionals deliver the counselling and can provide referrals when needed.
“We recognize that the demands of public service can take a toll on mental health, and we want to ensure that support is available when it’s needed most,” said Cory Deagle, minister of housing, land and communities. “By investing in the well-being of our local leaders, we’re not only strengthening municipal governance—we’re also encouraging a culture of care, resilience, and leadership across the province.”
Rising pressures on municipal officials
Bruce MacDougall, president of the Federation of Prince Edward Island Municipalities, said municipal officials across Canada face increasing strain from complex issues, rising public expectations, and instances of conflict or harassment.
“The Federation is pleased to see the province’s commitment to the Municipal Leaders Talk Program,” said MacDougall. “This dedicated counselling service will help strengthen the well-being and promote the retention of Prince Edward Island’s municipal leaders, who work every day to serve their communities.”
