Staffy Health has launched a biometric shift authentication and a one-device policy, measures the company says will improve shift accuracy and reduce fraud — and it claims to be the first in Canada to make this move.
The Toronto-based platform announced Tuesday it will use facial or fingerprint recognition to verify healthcare workers’ identities during shift check-ins and check-outs. The system creates what the company calls a tamper-proof record of shift attendance.
The biometric rollout happens in three phases. All new contractors now register biometric data when they join the platform. Existing contractors are currently updating their profiles to include biometric credentials. By September, all shifts will require biometric verification for completion.
New device policy aims to prevent misuse
Alongside the biometric system, Staffy has introduced a one-device-per-worker policy across Canada. The policy limits shift check-ins to a single registered mobile device, preventing workers from sharing devices or misusing accounts.
The combined measures support more accurate shift records, reduced identity fraud, and clearer audit trails for healthcare facilities, the company said.
Staffy also released a worker reliability rating system that gives healthcare organizations transparency when booking shifts. Each contractor receives a live score based on attendance, punctuality, and performance from previous shifts.
CEO explains motivation for changes
“No one asked us to implement these changes — we’re doing it because it’s the right thing to do,” said Peter Faist, CEO of Staffy Health. “We’re building tools that empower our partners to operate with clarity, security, and trust every step of the way.”
The platform connects hospitals, long-term care homes, and homecare providers with nurses, personal support workers, and allied health professionals through what it describes as a secure, on-demand marketplace.
Industry moves toward digital solutions
Healthcare staffing has increasingly moved toward technology-based solutions as organizations seek better visibility and control over temporary workers. The biometric authentication represents a step toward addressing concerns about shift verification and worker accountability in healthcare settings.
The changes come as healthcare facilities across Canada continue to face staffing shortages, making reliable temporary staffing solutions more critical for maintaining operations.
Staffy Health operates as a digital alternative to traditional staffing agencies, providing real-time visibility and digital records for healthcare administrators managing temporary staff.
