Zabeda Yaqoob, K.C. will lead the Alberta Human Rights Commission and Tribunals starting today in a six-year appointment that runs until July 20, 2031.
Yaqoob brings more than 20 years of experience in administrative, family and child protection law to the role. She has worked in senior legal positions in both Canada and the United Kingdom, focusing on procedural fairness, transparency and equity in complex adjudication and case management processes.
Background in regulatory leadership
The King’s Counsel appointee has handled legal, regulatory and adjudicative matters while overseeing compliance with legislative requirements. She has served as a designated Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy coordinator, managing privacy and access to information functions.
Yaqoob completed her legal education and professional training in the United Kingdom before meeting Canadian legal training requirements for regulatory and adjudicative leadership roles.
Community service and access to justice
Beyond her professional duties, Yaqoob has provided pro bono legal services and worked with equity-seeking communities in Canada and the UK to improve access to justice for individuals facing systemic barriers.
She received her King’s Counsel designation in recognition of her contributions to the legal profession, regulatory leadership and community service.
The Alberta Human Rights Commission investigates discrimination complaints and educates the public about human rights issues in the province.
