A workplace incident that left a Saskatchewan Power Corporation worker seriously injured has led to a $700,000 fine for the company. The sentence, handed down on October 31 in Prince Albert Provincial Court, stems from the corporation’s violation of provincial safety regulations.

According to the court, Saskatchewan Power failed to comply with subsection 30-16 (4) of The Occupational Health and Safety Regulations, 2020, which mandates minimum safety distances for workers and equipment near energized electrical conductors.

The company was fined $500,000, with an additional surcharge of $200,000, after a May 2022 incident near Sandy Bay, Saskatchewan, where a worker sustained serious injuries following exposure to high-voltage electricity.

The incident involved equipment operating too close to exposed, energized electrical lines, according to provincial safety authorities.

An additional charge against the corporation was withdrawn in court.
