The Society for Human Resource Management is pushing for comprehensive federal standards in the United States on workplace artificial intelligence following the Trump administration’s latest executive order on AI governance.
The Alexandria, Va.-based organization said any nationwide AI strategy must include clear, actionable rules for how employers use AI in hiring, performance reviews, scheduling, pay decisions and workforce monitoring.
HR expertise needed in policy development
SHRM said federal agencies must include HR and talent management experts in advisory councils and rulemaking processes as AI policies take shape.
“AI in the workplace is fundamentally about people,” according to the organization.
The group represents nearly 340,000 members across 180 countries.
Call for regulatory consistency
SHRM outlined five priorities for federal AI workplace policy. The organization said rules must be consistent across federal agencies to prevent conflicting mandates that complicate compliance.
The group also called for implementation support, including federal toolkits, training resources, model policies and phased compliance deadlines.
Balancing protection and innovation
Federal policy should address job displacement risks while encouraging responsible AI adoption, according to SHRM.
The organization said policies must protect workers without creating excessive regulatory burdens for employers.
SHRM said it is ready to work with the Trump administration, lawmakers and business leaders to develop federal workplace AI standards.
