Alberta’s minister of jobs, economy and trade is urging the federal government to intervene in the ongoing Canada Post strike, citing billions of dollars in costs to Canadian businesses and harm to charities and consumers.
“Alberta’s government is deeply concerned by the lack of progress in negotiations between Canada Post and the Canadian Union of Postal Workers,” said Minister of Jobs, Economy and Trade Matt Jones. He said the strike was already creating “serious and far-reaching effects,” especially for small- and medium-sized businesses that rely on timely deliveries.
Jones said that, according to the Canadian Federation of Independent Business, the strike is costing Canadian businesses $76 million per day, and has so far totalled more than $2 billion. He said these ongoing disruptions are weighing heavily on the Alberta economy, where small- and medium-sized businesses make up 99.8 per cent of all businesses.
“This strike has also severely disrupted the ability for charities to receive donations and communicate with supporters, jeopardizing their critical work,” said Jones, adding that Ottawa “must use every tool at its disposal” to bring an immediate end to the dispute.
