Hydro Ottawa has been named one of Canada’s Top Employers for Young People for the 10th time, highlighting its commitment to developing talent and preparing a younger workforce for the future of energy. The recognition was announced on Jan. 21 and underscores the utility’s focus on electrification, digitization, and achieving net-zero operations by 2030.
Nearly 40 per cent of Hydro Ottawa’s employees are under the age of 35, a figure bolstered by programs that provide paid apprenticeships, engineering internships, and opportunities for post-secondary students. The company also offers scholarships, tuition subsidies, and access to a large digital learning platform, along with virtual reality training for trades and apprentices.
“Hydro Ottawa is empowering a young and talented workforce ready to build and lead the future of energy,” said Bryce Conrad, president and CEO. He added that the company offers careers focused on tackling significant challenges and finding sustainable solutions for the energy industry.
As part of its efforts to increase gender equity in trades and STEM fields, Hydro Ottawa supports initiatives such as the Powerline Technician Diploma Program at Algonquin College, which includes the “We Saved You a Seat” program encouraging female participation. The company also established a $2,500 annual scholarship for first-year female students in the program.
External partnerships, including one with Carleton University’s Women in Engineering and IT Program, aim to promote diversity and leadership development in engineering and technical roles.
Apprentices currently make up nearly 24 per cent of Hydro Ottawa’s trades workforce, reflecting the company’s focus on fostering skilled talent. Hydro Ottawa says these efforts align with its broader strategy to embrace innovation and sustainability while attracting professionals passionate about renewable energy and environmental stewardship.
Hydro Ottawa is owned by the City of Ottawa and serves over 364,000 customers. Its subsidiaries include Portage Power, Envari, and Hiboo Networks, which contribute to green energy production, energy efficiency solutions, and high-speed digital connectivity.
