Nurix Therapeutics has appointed Wes Burwell as its chief human resources officer, adding him to the clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company’s executive management team as it moves toward commercializing its drug pipeline.

Burwell will lead the company’s human resources organization as Nurix advances its late-stage clinical programs and prepares for commercialization, while continuing its work in targeted protein degradation drug discovery. The company is based in Brisbane, California, and trades on the Nasdaq under the ticker NRIX.

“Nurix has reached an exciting inflection point,” said Burwell. “The company’s scientific leadership, differentiated pipeline and strategic accomplishments have created an extraordinary opportunity to build an organization capable of delivering innovative medicines to patients around the world. I look forward to partnering with Arthur, the Executive Management Team and employees across the company to build the capabilities that will support Nurix’s continued growth and long-term success.”

Burwell brings more than 20 years of human resources leadership experience in the life sciences sector, with a focus on building the talent, culture and organizational capabilities companies need as they move from research through commercialization.

He most recently served as vice-president of human resources at Bolt Biotherapeutics. Before that, he held senior human resources roles at Global Blood Therapeutics, where he worked on talent acquisition, leadership development and employee engagement as the company grew from early clinical development into a commercial-stage biotechnology organization.

Earlier in his career, Burwell held leadership positions at both biotechnology and technology companies. He also founded a human resources consulting and executive recruiting practice, and has served on the boards of several nonprofit organizations focused on health care and education.

Nurix’s president and chief executive officer, Arthur Sands, said the company is shifting from a research and early clinical-stage operation into a fully integrated biopharmaceutical organization.

“Building the capabilities, leadership and culture needed to support that transformation is vital to the advancement of our pipeline,” said Sands. “Wes has an outstanding record of scaling organizations through rapid growth, strengthening leadership teams and fostering a high-performing, mission-driven culture. His deep experience makes him an exceptional addition to our Executive Management Team as we prepare for our next phase of growth.”

Burwell holds a master of business administration in international business from the University of San Francisco and a bachelor’s degree in human resource management from Golden Gate University.
